The Dispersion Relation for Electrostatic Fluctuations in Weakly Inhomogeneous Plasmas
Along the last few years we have conducted several investigations on waves in inhomogeneous plasmas, using the concept of effective dielectric tensor, which has been proposed as the correct dielectric tensor for the description of dielectric properties of inhomogeneous plasmas [1]. Among these investigations, we have considered cases where the magnetic field is homogeneous and other plasma para...
متن کاملOn the Analysis of Dispersion Relation of Spatially Shoaling Waves
As waves propagate into nearshore waters, the wave dispersive relation is significantly affected by the nonlinear dynamics of the shoaling process (Herbers et al. 2002). This could have important effects to the interpretation and application of remote sensing results of shallow water waves (Stockdon and Holman, 2000). Many field studies are carried out based on temporally measured wave data to ...
متن کاملExperimental Determination of the Dispersion Relation for Spiral Waves.
We have experimentally measured the dispersion relation of spiral waves in the BelousovZhabotinsky reaction in an open spatial reactor, for different concentrations. Appropriate rescaling permits the collapse of all data onto a single line. From this, we infer an analytic form for the dispersion relation, which only depends on two physical quantities. In particular, this relation implies that t...
متن کاملDispersion relation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves using Cluster observations
Multi-point wave observations on Cluster spacecraft are used to infer the dispersion relation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. In this study we use a phase differencing method and observations from STAFF and WHISPER during a well-studied event of 30 March 2002. The phase differencing method requires the knowledge of the direction of the wave vector, which was obtained using minimu...
متن کاملDispersion relation for water waves with non-constant vorticity
We derive the dispersion relation for linearized small-amplitude gravity waves for various choices of non-constant vorticity. To the best of our knowledge, this relation is only known explicitly in the case of constant vorticity. We provide a wide range of examples including polynomial, exponential, trigonometric and hyperbolic vorticity functions.
